The Flight of the Horny Bumblebee

It is apparently Bumblebee Mating Season. They are flying all over the place in fat, cuddly, buzzy little pairs. One lone bee has taken up a job as sentry of my staircase; he buzzes around, inspecting each person to climb the stairs. I never want to just walk through him - I don't want to incite him to sting - so I generally allow him to do his security check, and then ask him politely to fly aside. He usually does. He's a very well-mannered little bee.
I'm not sure what he likes about my staircase. I have no flowering plants - no plants of any kind, in fact - and I don't know what else bumblebees like that would make him decide to fly near my staircase all the time.
It's kind of cute to have a bumblebee sentry, though.
At least he's not a froward bee. Nor a zombee.
