"You're cheating again!"
Simon Templar, sprawled on his spine in an armchair with one foot on the floor and the other dangling over the side of the chair to tap a rhythm on the adjacent end-table, looked up and smiled sweetly, dangerously. "Am I, dear heart?"
"Either that," his accuser - Roger Conway - persevered uncowed, "or you've managed to get a deck with five aces in." He spread a hand of cards over the table and sat back with crossed arms. "And there were only four when i was playing solitaire last night."
"Perhaps one of the jokers just downed his fifth plane and got promoted," Simon suggested. He propped himself upright and surveyed the cards interestedly, then looked up with wide, guileless blue eyes. "How do we know you're not the one cheating?"
Incredulous silence.
"Roger, you ass!" wailed Patricia Holm, hastily gathering anything breakable from the vicinity and retreating into the front room, where she put on the gramophone and waited for the neighbours to come knocking.
