titusnowlThierry is not Alistair, but Alistair is Thierry - Thierry with more wear on him; here a bit worn smoother, here a bit worn rough.
Alistair is Thierry with something that's actually worth pretending he's not afraid of.
Thierry will take responsibility, when it's there and he thinks it needs to be taken; he'll carry a teammmate 30 miles in the rain and refuse help, he'll do his ill-accepted and perhaps ill-advised best to keep spirits up in a bomb shelter, he'll try. Alistair actually has responsibility, whether he always wants to carry it or not; and that changes a person.
They share the same set of morals and ethics, but Alistair finds himself in a position where he actually needs to express them sometimes, and he hates it. They share the same sense of humour, too, but Thierry finds himself in a position where he can exploit it better, and he loves it.
Thierry has more time for poetry, more time for jokes; Alistair smiles just as often, but means it less.
Alistair feels less like a failure deep within his secret hidden heart of hearts.
