(no subject)
May. 17th, 2006 09:32 pmCan anyone suggest to me a good book about Queen Elizabeth I? It can be non-fiction or a good fiction. I'm particularly interested in her love life - if you know of a good book that successfully treats one of her suspected love affairs, I'd read it.
What would have happened, had she consented to marry? Would they have crowned her husband King, regardless of his descent - and hers, the daughter of Henry VIII? (And a most ambitious woman, who stole the king from her sister's bed and convinced him to marry her because she wouldn't fuck him until then - who, then, can find fault with Elizabeth's ambitious nature, given her parentage?) Obviously Victoria's husband, and that of Elizabeth II, have been simply Royal Consorts of some kind, but they had Elizabeth I's precedent for that.
Perhaps Elizabeth herself was afraid that her husband would take control of the throne, and that was why she never married anyone. Perhaps she was simply afraid that marriage, in suborning her to her husband and showing her to be a human subject to the same matrimonial urges as others, would weaken her appearance of strength and her ability to command the respect of her court (which I understand was already tenuous at times).
This post is about Elizabeth in general! Share any and all thoughts on her in the comments.
