How in the heck do you tuck up your hair under a handkerchief? Y'know, in the style of Rosie the Riveter or Mammy from Gone With the Wind, so it stays out of your way when you're cleaning? I can never get mine to stay.

It was probably twisted and gathered and then fixed in place with pins or something. The kerchief wasn't to keep it in place so much as it was there to keep it clean.
