"I'm sorry, ma'am, this is copyrighted."
"What if I cut off the part with the copyright notice on it?"
"I'm sorry, ma'am, it would STILL be copyrighted."
"What if I do it when you're not looking, and you pretend you didn't see it before?"
"Ma'am, I saw it perfectly well, and I do know it's copyrighted. It is against federal law to copy that without the permission of the original photographer."
"But what if you didn't know it was copyrighted?"
"That point is moot, ma'am, because I DO know it is copyrighted, and I will not pretend not to just so you can have a photocopy of it."
"What if I cut off the part with the notice and go to that other girl?"
"Ma'am, she's already seen it, and she knows it's copyrighted too."
"What if I come back tomorrow and I've cut off the part that has the copyright notice?"
"I'll still know it's copyrighted."
"How can I get a copy of this, then?"
"Bring us back written, signed permission from the photographer, and we can make as many copies as the photographer says you're allowed to."
"What if I write out a permission form myself and sign it like the photographer?"
"Ma'am, that would still be illegal, your photograph would still be copyrighted, and I would still not allow you to copy it in this store."

Finally she left.

Well, for one thing, there was a stamp on the back with the photographer's name and the copyright symbol! That's your first clue! Coupled with the fact that it was very, very obviously posed in a studio, complete with studio accessories and careful fill lighting, and the serial numbers on the edges of the print (in the white borders that are covered when the print is matted and framed). On top of that was the unusual format - it was a 5" square, which is a common size for some studios around here to give out as samples before you buy the full package, especially of wedding photos; a non-professional photo printed at a regular department-store photo studio won't be printed in that size.

Seriously, at that point, even if I hadn't somehow become the Campus Crusader for Copyright that I seem to have become lately, I would refuse to help her just out of spite. How many times can you be told no and still expect me to lie for you, idiot woman?

The ONLY thing that would have added to the stupid would be if she offered you a bribe to copy the picture FOR her.

Kudos to you for not hitting her upside the head with a toner cartridge.
