Well, guess what?

I showed the assistant manager that website, and she threatened to fire me!!!! She insists that I have some sort of plot or ulterior motive in showing this to her, despite the fact that I VERY SPECIFICALLY said that I was showing her this because I think it's important that everyone in the branch is on the same page regarding copyright and fair use, so that we aren't all at odds with the customers in the middle - one person saying "no, we can't do this" and another saying "yes, just not back here" - and the store is safe from any legal danger - which I'm sure we're in right now as we have such a reputation that Walmart SENDS PEOPLE HERE to get things copied when they can't do it themselves for copyright reasons. AND SHE THREATENED TO FIRE ME!!!!

This was four hours before my shift ended. I had to work for four more hours knowing that my job was in jeopardy. There is no way I can go in there tomorrow, even if calling it might give them a legitimate reason to fire me.

On top of everything else, I have a recurring problem with chest pain, for which I've been checked out repeatedly - the doctors have agreed that it's nothing dangerous, and it's not indicative of anything, it's just something to do with my chest muscles, even if it does feel dangerously like heart problems. It tends to be brought on by stress; I first noticed it when I was in Mississippi, stressing out over everything and deep in a depressive funk; it came back last year, and of course, I'm suffering from it now. There's nothing I can do but deal with it. It's dreadfully uncomfortable.

I think you should call their HR department, or their Hotline for employees with problems, surely they have something like that. =))

Or you can call your DM, district manager or something? =))

Did anyone else witness this? Any other coworkers, customers, etc? If not, get someone to go with you and go up to her and ask her again to clarify what she said. Say something like, "I wanted to make sure I understood what you said the other day when I brought up the information on copyright infringement." If she repeats the scenario, get your witness to write up a summary of what was said and send it to your district manager, along with the information on copyright infringement. And start looking for another job, just in case.

What a fucking bitch! (The manager, not you hon!) I'm so sorry you have to go through all this shit.

Can you get in touch with the branch manager? Will he/she be there tomorrow? There is no way they can fire you for trying to follow the law and protect the store from liability. If the store manager won't back you up, you need to keep taking this up the chain, to the point of calling corporate if necessary. I know this has put you in a very bad position as far as having a comfortable work environment, but this is absolutely ridiculous, and somebody who is going to give a shit needs to know about this.

Oh and if you can't even UPLOAD copyrighted material that isn't yours, ie pictures from a professional photographer, then why in the world would you be able to print them in the store?!

She is breaking the rule, not you. You shouldn't be combative about it, but it is company policy, as well as federal law that you are trying to uphold.

I agree with everyone here. You should get some witnesses for her threat to fire you, or ask for it in writing. Then take the incident to the next level. However many next levels you need to take it.

Just remind yourself that you have done nothing wrong.
