OMGWTFBBQ. Every dish in the kitchen is dirty now. Three bowls, two sets of solids measuring cups, two liquids measuring cups, the measuring spoons, a whisk, a wooden spoon, two spatulas, a teaspoon, two butter knives, a saucepan, and of course the pan the cake is in...
The cake was too hot when I frosted it and the icing started to melt so I put the cake in the fridge and now the icing is all marbled with two different shades of brown but it tastes ok.
I'm looking forward to tasting this cake. It is going to be one very rich cake. The cake itself is so dark it's almost black, and it smells delicious, and the batter was very chocolatey (usually you can't taste the chocolate so much in the batter, you just taste it once it's baked). I guess having three kinds of chocolate in it helps, though. (There's a total of 14 ounces of chocolate in this cake and the frosting.)

Date: 2004-04-09 09:12 pm (UTC)Ingredients for the Cake
1/2 cup real butter
1 cup Coca-Cola (no, Pepsi/RC/whatever will NOT taste right; NO, do NOT use diet or caffeine-free or With Lemon)
1 oz. semi-sweet baking chocolate
3/4 cup mini marshmallows
2 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 1/2 tsp salt
2 cups granulated sugar
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup vegetable oil
2 tsp vanilla extract
2 eggs
3/4 cup buttermilk
Ingredients for the Frosting
1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup cola
1/4 cup chocolate syrup
1 tsp vanilla
ALLEZ CUISINE!!!!
part one the cake
In a SAUCEPAN, bring butter, cola, and baking chocolate to a boil. Remove from heat and stir in marshmallows until dissolved. Set aside and allow to cool to room temperature.
In BOWL #1, combine flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt; set aside.
In BOWL #2, beat together sugar, shortening, oil and vanilla until fluffy. Beat in eggs and buttermilk. Beat in half of the dry mix from BOWL #1. Then beat in the (now-cooled) cola/chocolate mixture (DO NOT test the temperature of the chococolabutter by sticking your finger in, then licking your finger. Chococolabutter isn't yummy). Finally, beat in the rest of the dry mixture and keep mixing it for 4 minutes. The batter is pretty damn thick.
Pour into a greased and floured 13x9 baking pan. Bake at 350 for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. It took about 45 minutes for ours to bake, and our oven was preheated and everything, so use the toothpick trick.
part two the frosting
Cream butter with an electric mixer. Beat in cocoa powder, cola, chocolate syrup and vanilla. Slowly add powdered sugar, scraping the sides of the bowl often, while beating with the mixture. Breathe deeply while you do this; the sugar will be absorbed through your lungs by osmosis and give you a nice little sugar-cocaine high. If it seems too dry - ours did - add a bit of cola until you reach a nice consistency. You want to frosting to be kind of thick, though. That way it will "set" a little when it dries.
For best results, serve warmed with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream on the side.
