We have an outgoing mail box inside the store, but the postal worker never ever comes in to pick it up unless he has something to drop off to us. We haven't received any mail since last Thursday so our outgoing slot was getting really full.

So I get back from my lunch break and Denise tells me to take all of that mail down to the big blue USPS boxes on the other end of the strip mall's parking lot. She tells me very adamantly that I am to do this BEFORE I clock in.

I don't think that's fair. What do you think?

If I'm not mistaken, it is against the law for them to ask you to do work when you are not on the clock. There's also a liability issue involved. If something were to happen to you - whether it be something as simple as twisting your ankle while you're walking or something more serious like a car jumping the curb - while you were doing work off the clock, that can deny liability precisely because you are not on the clock.

You left out the option I would hav chosen: Fucking duh. Of course you should be on the clock, you're doing tasks for your employer.

I'd think you could make a case that you shouldn't be doing that at all. Only postal workers are supposed to handle other people's mail once it's in a USPS dropoff. Federal crime. Call the post office and ask then go in to work armed with knowledge.

Of course you should clock in first before doing any work for the store. Honest work for an honest wage, that sort of thing.

Which did you do, btw?

Shut up and did it. This is the bitch who tried to fire me for refusing to copy professional photographs. I'd like to have a job for the next five weeks.

Of course, shit like this is why I'm only giving one week's notice.
