titusnowlOn Friday, we shipped Justin's Speed Graphic, its flash, some film, several lens filters, a few boxes of flashbulbs, and assorted other photography equipment up to Mom's house so we wouldn't have to lug it on the plane. We chose FedEx, because as a Kinko's employee I get 75% off FedEx shipping. We chose "Express Saver," which is a 3-business-day shipping option and was supposed to get there Wednesday. It cost us $30 to ship two boxes of 10 and 15 pounds respectively.
Today around noon I got a phone call from the FedEx delivery guy, who was standing in my mother's driveway with my boxes in his truck. "There's nobody home," he said. "Do you want I should leave 'em here or take 'em back to the depot and wait for a signature? If I leave 'em here I can go put 'em in their screenhouse in the backyahd, so you can't see 'em from the road and they're good if it rains." I had him leave 'em in the screenhouse in the backyahd.
I was surprised by a) it getting there the very next business day and b) him calling me to ask what to do with the package. I was under the impression they'd only do what was specified on the order form, which was to request a signature ("signature required" is the default and I didn't bother to opt out of it). I am very pleased with FedEx.
Plus nothing was broken, not even the 30-year-old flashbulbs! WAAAY better than the USPS track record with my shipments - I've never yet had a box go from NY to here or from here to NY without SOMETHING in it getting broken.
