1. Libraries. There is no public building from which I can glean more enjoyment than the library. I can spend hours browsing the stacks, rifling through the periodicals, and perusing the bound volumes of Time and Life from the '30s, '40s and '50s looking at the old ads. The first thing I do in any new town, before I even change the address on my driver's license, is take my lease as proof of residence and go get myself a library card. I have to return some library books today or tomorrow, incidentally. I wonder what I'll find to read next?
2. Languages. I only speak 1.5 - fluent in English and meh in French. I love the way language works, and I want to know more, both so I can communicate with more people and in order to illuminate the connections between the languages more fully. I love knowing why words work, where they come from, what they mean etymologically, and why we use them the way we do. For instance, did you know that the etymological origin of the Spanish word for beer, "cerveza" (as well as its cognates in other languages, including, of all things, ancient Gaelic), comes from "the beverage of Ceres," the Greek goddess of grain and the harvest?
3. Lego. We have a very large box of this wonderful plastic building toy sitting under the typewriter table in the living room. Justin has used it to build a working trebuchet. I mostly just build houses. There's a Lego set in stores right now that features a T. rex attacking a realistically-styled helicopter. Isn't that awesome?
4. Llama. El llama es un quadrupedo, que vive in rios grandes como el Amazona. El tiene dos ojos, una corazon, un frente y un pico parao comer pie. Las llamas son mas grandes de las ranas. Las llamas son muy peligros, y si tu miras de gente nadan, grito "CUIDADO! LLAMAS!"
5. Lileks. His "Institute of Official Cheer" has been a model to me in my own interest in ephemera.
6. Lizard. I enjoy our nightly visits from Art, "our" gecko. He hangs out on my window and eats moths. He's very cute.
7. Liquids. Liquids are important! If there were no liquids, life would suck. I particularly enjoy such liquids as milk, rum, vodka, and strawberry-orange smoothies.
8. Louisiana. Although every single interaction I've ever had with a police officer in the great state of Louisiana has been a clusterfuck of shouting angry men and anger directed at the circumstances of my birth (you do realize I didn't have any choice over what part of the country my parents settled in while my mom was pregnant, right?), I try not to hold a grudge against the whole state, if only because it's the only place in the world where you can get a good beignet.
9. Limes. Limes are an important ingredient in one of my favorite liquids, the mixed drink known as the mojito. To create this summery beverage, you muddle together fresh mint leaves and sliced lime, covered with sugar. Next you add ice cubes, rum and a splash of club soda. Stir well, and garnish with a lime wedge and a sprig of mint. Sip, and enjoy the taste of pre-embargo Cuba.
10. Little Owls. Athene noctua was, as the name suggests, held sacred to the goddess Athena, because owls are wise and Little Owls are pocket-sized. They are similar in appearance to America's Burrowing Owl (about which a movie, I think it's titled Hoot, will be coming out over the summer), but they live in Europe. They're adorable!
