titusnowl: (up to something)

I usually prefer to bake from scratch (with the exception of brownies; I scarcely consider them a true baked good at all - they're just something yummy that comes in a box and needs to be cooked, like macaroni and cheese or fish sticks), but today I am trying something with a cake mix.  I found a Duncan Hines Dark Chocolate Fudge cake mix at the grocery store, and modified it by replacing the water with Coca-Cola and adding a teaspoon of ginger.  I know the Coke will work; one of my favorite recipes to make from scratch is a chocolate Coca-Cola cake, which tastes very good and can also be found (for those of you who can't come over and sample my baking) at Cracker Barrel in January and February.  (Why chocolate cake is considered a seasonal menu item, I am not sure.)  The ginger is a new one for me; I've had a little jar of ginger in the cupboard since Christmas, when I intended to make a medieval gingerbread recipe but never got around to it.  (This is the story of my life.  I bought three yards of Rifle-green cotton from the dollar rack at Walmart today, with the best of intentions, and we'll see if I ever get around to THAT.  Right now it's sitting next to the bag full of corset supplies and the possibly-broken sewing machine.)  Anyway, I was inspired to use the ginger by reading in a magazine a suggestion for making cherry-Coke cake; it was noted in the recipe that although the recipe for Coke is a secret, most colas feature the flavors of ginger and citrus.  Ginger and chocolate, I believe, are known to complement each other, and it may also bring out the flavor of the Coke a bit.  The batter certainly tasted nice, and the cake smells delicious; we shall see whether my experiment is a success.

I know I shouldn't eat the cake batter, or the brownie mix, or the cookie dough.  I know I am tempting fate with death-by-salmonella, with the raw eggs all up ins.  But they taste so good! Brownie mix, in particular, tastes better when eaten straight out of the bowl with a spoon than it ever does after it's baked.
