i'm spamming!

One of the highlights of seeing Master and Commander in the theater was when the crew sang "Spanish Ladies" and Justin sang along. Yes, he knows the lyrics to random old sea shanties. I was surprised. I shouldn't have been - he's a repository of odd knowledge. Although he doesn't know the Erie Canal song.

Twice.

He got it at Walmart, not realizing that THEIRS is only the movie. Couldn't return it, so had to eat the cost and go to Best Buy to get the Collector's Edition with the extras. Will attempt to sell movie-only version ASAP to partially recoup loss.

he doesn't know the Erie Canal song.

you mean the one that goes:

I got a mule
and her name is Sal
15 miles on the Eire Canal

And you'll always know your neighbor
You'll always know your pal
If you've ever navigated on the Erie Canal

I've got a mule, her name is Sal
15 miles on the Erie Canal
She's a good old worker and a good old pal
15 miles on the Erie Canal
We've hauled some barges in our day
Filled with lumber, coal and hay
Til we know every inch of the way
From Albany to Buffalo-oooo
Low bridge! Everybody down!
Low bridge 'cause we're coming to a town
And you'll always know your neighbor
You'll always know your pal
If you've ever navigated on the Erie Canal

I sing this spontaneously and repetitively. If I see a sign that says "Low Bridge," cue the Erie Canal song. We learned it in grade school. We also learned a song called "Buttermilk Hill" which I've never heard since (there i sat on buttermilk hill, who could blame me cry my fill, and every tear would turn a mill, johnny is gone for a soldier)

I learned that back in my folksinger days along with about a gazillion other numbers that bounce uselessly around in my head to this very day.

Farewell and Adieu
All you fine Spanish Ladies
Farewell and Adieu
All you ladies of Spain

For we're hosting our anchor
And setting the mainmast
And nevermore
shall we see thee again

They do that one at the Med Fest and the Revels that Rich's alma mater puts on every year. They used to dedicate it to one of his friend's because, when she was going in garb, she played a Spanish Lady. There are very few of the students that know the tradition now.

The two songs that I knew the best from there were "Wild Rover" and "Ratlin' Bog" (which has been known to cause the inability to breath, if I'm not careful!)

Oh shut up. I hate that fucking Erie Canal song.

Mr. Baitzel (the cruelest fucking asshole to ever get a teaching license) taught it to us in third grade, and I had to put up with it until I graduated from eighth grade.

Goddamnit.
