I admit, I wasn't initially sold on the old radio programme with Vincent Price as Simon Templar - he is so very unabashedly British in my mind, you know, and Vincent Price is so very unabashedly not, that at first I had difficulty overcoming my prejudice against the non-English.  But the character isn't necessarily a limey - there's really nothing in the personality that requires a British background - and Saintly escapades work just as well in New York City, after all - and so once I'd given it a fair open-minded listen, the performance really won me over.  Price's portrayal is spot-on, with that peculiar mix of whimsy and cunning which I so adore, and the scripts are generally quite humourous.

"Men rarely commit suicide by stabbing themselves in the back; they find it inconvenient or something."

Amusingly, the programme seems to have been sponsored by Organized Religion.

I am currently watching the Saint series from Netflix - so much fun! Occasionally I can match a plot with the books, but I mostly look at the clothes :)

So far I've only read a few of the earliest books - The Man Who Was Clever, The Saint Closes The Case and its direct sequel The Avenging Saint, and the beginning of The Saint vs. Scotland Yard. In the last of these, he has lost all his haloes. It saddens me. I was very fond of Roger Conway. I always get most taken with supporting characters, and I liked the interaction between them (the 'shipping is tongue-in-cheek).

Stated: If they were to make a Saintly film tomorrow, Jude Law would be the ideal actor for the part. Discuss?

A thought I'd meant to include in this post:

The radio show seems to have characters who fill Roger's role, since although Simon is quite capable of standing on his own, having a wisecracking foil around is always helpful. They ought to just have Roger, dash it all.

Jude Law, maybe... he seems a little young to me. I agree that the gang would be a welcome addition - Norman is my favorite. I currently have 30 books tagged the Saint on Library Thing. Some are duplicates (changing titles - grrr.) If I ever figure out which they are, I will send them to you. Have you seen http://www.saint.org ?

The age thing is a funny thing - Justin and I had this very discussion when I suggested Jude Law; the Saint is quite specifically stated to be 28 and 29 in Closes the Case and Avenging, respectively, you see. Mr. Law is 34, and fits the mental image I've developed of Mr. Templar from the books quite well. (It probably helps that I've never seen Roger Moore in the role, nor in fact any other actor, and so have no preconceived notions.) His eyes are very nearly the piercing blue upon which Mr. Charteris lavishes so many adjectives - as Hugh Laurie said, though I'm paraphrasing as I haven't a copy of The Gun Seller in front of me, those extraordinarily blue eyes that very talented people have (http://handson.provocateuse.com/show/jude_law/16); he can do action (http://handson.provocateuse.com/show/jude_law/19) very well; immaculate gentility (http://handson.provocateuse.com/show/jude_law/21), of course, faultlessly; a certain devil-may-care humour (http://handson.provocateuse.com/show/jude_law/11), equally delightfully; and, of course, he's a looker, which I am quite willing to admit is a consideration. (Don't forget the inevitable cigarette (http://handson.provocateuse.com/show/jude_law/09).)

The real deal...

which I can't resolve, is the voice. I don't remember what Law sounds like, but I do have a feeling for what Simon should sound like. I do recommend the Saint TV show, but probably after you've read the books. It's classic, much like the Avengers at times. I'm off to watch a few more episodes now~

I have a Thing for British accents.

Jude Law's voice is versatile. I don't quite recall the exact tone and timbre, but I know he can do multiple accents (I've heard him do everything from Chicago to Cockney to uppity RP), and I don't really have a specific feeling for Simon's pitch anyway.
